The New Zealand Government has partnered with the Solomon Islands Government to recruit and resource this role from within the New Zealand Government finance cadre. New Zealand is a trusted bilateral partner of Solomon Islands and our support of this role aligns to the shared bilateral values of good governance.

The Accountant General is a statutory position mandated by the Public Financial Management Act to ensure prudent management of government resources and accounting of public money, store or property. This position directly reports to the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT) and is the head of the Solomon Islands Government accounting service.

The objectives of the Accountant General is to:

  • Contribute to better financial management across the Solomon Islands Government,
  • Fulfil statutory obligations under the Public Financial Management Act 2013 and the Constitution,
  • Support the transfer of knowledge and development of skills of Ministry of Finance and Treasury staff regarding the financial management function of Government,
  • Provide ongoing technical support on financial management issues to the Minister for Finance and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, and
  • Develop a succession plan for transitioning in a permanent Account General

This opportunity will appeal if you have:

  • CA (or equivalent) qualified, and eligible to become a member of the Institute of Solomon Islands Accountants
  • The ability to work in a complex work environment with the patience, creativity and tenacity to deal with institutional and cultural challenges
  • Political sensitivity - ability to interact with key public sector staff and adjust approach to obtain outcomes
  • demonstrated understanding in the following areas:
  • the delivery of government financial services,
  • knowledge of financial and statutory reporting,
  • financial management practice and legislation
  • management of accounting processes
  • collection and presentation of information to support decision-making.
  • The ability to mentor, motivate, develop effective teams and transfer skills to staff and stakeholders in the Pacific context
  • High level of verbal & written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically manage and coordinate the operations of an organisation or team in an environment of competing priorities and challenging timeframes

This senior level secondment or fixed term contract offers an exciting opportunity to gain international experience at a senior level. You must be a New Zealand citizen to be considered for this role.
