The Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board (MFB) is a world class emergency service employing over 2300 people and responding to 36,000 calls per year from Melbourne's four million residents and visitors. Its services include urban search and rescue, response to fires and hazardous incidents, road accident rescue, emergency medical response and marine response. The MFB aims to create a safe workplace, a respectful and achievement oriented culture, and an agile and engaged workforce.

Due to a boom in major infrastructure work across Melbourne region, the MFB has created a new role for a Senior Fire Safety Engineer on a three year fixed term contract. This exciting and rare opportunity will give you direct access and exposure to a range of major projects currently under construction and being planned for the Melbourne region.

You will be providing contemporary advice, information and knowledge on engineering and technical matter related to fire safety in the built environment, in particular major community infrastructure projects such as road and rail. This will involve:

  • Assess and evaluate reports, engineering designs, project specifications and fire system designs
  • Maintain current and up to date knowledge of all applicable industry practices, standards, technology and other related issues regarding fire safety
  • Conduct specialist computer based simulations and fire brigade intervention modelling
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders on recent industry and project updates as well as current workload
  • Undertake fire safety inspections
  • Prepare and review fire safety policies
  • Represent the MFB at selected industry forums and seminars on fire safety related issues

To be considered for this role you will have an undergraduate degree in engineering plus a post graduate diploma in fire safety & risk engineering. This will ensure you are eligible for registration in the category of fire safety engineer in Victoria. In addition, you will have:

  • Significant industry experience in the disciplines of fire safety systems design or fire safety and risk engineering
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient computer user across office based software applications
  • Skilled in the use of the AFAC Fire Brigade Intervention Model and fire simulation software such as CFAST or BRANZFire
  • Any research and statistical skills highly regarded
  • An understanding of the procedural differences in relation to the development of fire safety designs between Infrastructure projects and the traditional built environment

The successful candidate will be offered a MFB 6 salary in the range of $109k -123k + Super plus a host of other employee benefits.
